My first Pontiac was dragged out of a back yard in Oklahoma.....

I was at an estate sale that had nothing worth while in the house. I asked the lady if there were any sheds with tools or anything. She told me there was a couple tractors and a car out back. I went out back to find a 64 Bonneville that hadn't been tagged since 2000. Her husband and sons were trying to start one of the tractors when I asked about the Pontiac. I asked what he was wanting for the car. He told me scrap value was $300 and that's what he'll take. I took it and got a title too! I was nervous about all of the headlights and grills missing, but they were all safely stowed away in the very rusted out trunk...I have fallen in love with this car and it will be back on the road again!

jason, something that i spotted thats odd ! it looks that your 64 has a fuel tank up the driverside inner rear quarter !

my 64 has the tank centre under the floor between the chassis rails !

It does have the 389. It's dated 1965, which might be common. I'm not sure. When looking at the heads they appear to be later model 455 heads. bore and stroke checked out to be 389 specs.  

The gas tank is under the floor. I think that picture makes the inner wheel well stand out for some reason.

Thank you! Ya it's got a lot of potential. First plan is to make it run and drive. Then l'll figure it out from there lol! I'll get some more pics up later when I'm home.

The Fisher Body Tag that is riveted to the driver's side cowl under the hood also contains useful information. For older Chevrolet Fisher tags, there are web sites that can decode that information - build plant where constructed, date built, original paint color, body trim level, series model information, interior trim level, interior color.

Is there a similar site for Pontiac vehicles?

Hello,

 

   Try the site below if you want to decode your Fisher Body Plate. Your plate will be on the vertical portion of the firewall, not high up on the driver's side of the cowl as I had previously mentioned. The site apparently has an out of date security certificate but looks legit to me.

  "Ames Performance Engineering" and the "Original Parts Group" both have eyeball candy paper catalogs to assist with you putting a Bonneville back together.  Obviously, they don't have everything available in retro parts but I was shocked to see what's out there in good quality. Between these catalogs and getting yourself a 1964 Factory Assembly Manual, you will know what was available that production year and what you are missing.

Like the pic's.  Took along time to get in that shape, will take time to get er back.  Stick to your list of priority parts.  Such as makin er move, gonna need some tires.  Lots of places/junkyards will sell you used tires on rims.  Don't be afraid to barter with em.  Like the tilt steering wheel too.

I got a wild hare and drug this rat infested pile home. It's a lot rougher than I had hoped, but I should be able to rob a few things. I mainly wanted the drivetrain. The engine does rotate. the engine in the 2 door took a lot of effort to get unstuck so I have concerns. Can anyone help with what the stamping on the front passenger side of the engine means? BTW, I would never take this many pictures of anything. I'm doing it for you...

The engine code is easy.

28P is a 303 HP 389 engine tied to an automatic transmission with air conditioning. Heads should be 9773345. Compression ratio is 10.5:1. Anything from a one to four barrel carb on it. It has a Pontiac 472 spec camshaft.

404256 should match the last six digits of your car’s VIN. If it matches, you have a numbers matching car. That means this engine is the original engine this car was born with.

i did the same and you will aprecate all the little clips and bolts and parts you can rob to make the coupe complete

think about making yourself a ames account !!! they are the best for specific stuff....

but having said that rockauto is very handy for bits too👍
