concern about oil capacity

I just receive a copy of an owners manual for my Pontiac GTO with a 389 motor the manual says 6 quarts oil with filter my chiltons book says 5 quarts with filter which is it  I'm hoping I've been doing it right with 5 quarts very concerned

What year GTO..??

Would start with five quarts..Then check the oil level..Then add if necessary until the dipstick indicates full...Make sure the oil filter is full before checking....Don't overfill... 

My '66 hold Seven (7) quarts, with filter.
