Rachel Mackey

Rachel Mackey, 18, said her second-grade teacher called her stupid. She recalls the instructor saying: "Rachel, if you can't read, how are you going to make it to the next grade?" The next year, she was diagnosed with dyslexia. Fortunately, Mackey said, two special-education teachers taught her how to read. By her first year of high school, she was no longer on an individualized education plan. In fact, she ended up taking four advanced-placement classes, four International Baccalaureate courses and four years of Spanish despite her learning disability. She has also taken honors courses, and this year she completed a dual-enrollment English class in which she thinks she'll receive a B-plus or an A. "I'd rather get a C in an advanced class than an A in a regular class and be bored," she said.

IN HER WORDS: "I think it was really my determination that got me through it, to be honest. I worked so hard to get to a normal reading level."

WHAT'S NEXT: Attending Virginia Commonwealth University to study biology or nursing. She plans to become a midwife after receiving her master's degree.
