  1. it didn't want to idle. I almost wonder if I still need that little canister on the outside of the ignition coil I almost wonder if that is sucking power and making a weak idle spark VID_20211106_125134026.mp4
  2. well, I am suspecting that one of the basic do it yourself cut to length plug wires isn't making a great contact or something, as I now have it idling albeit unsteady but when I rev it up it's fine, I adjusted the points, though they probably could go a hair tighter as I used dial calipers and found something that is between 0.019-0.020 for the gap and gapped it, it idled on choke fine but once it idled down it died and I had to bring the idle up with the screw on the throttle linkage. Now it's a little on the unsteady side. I'd have to manually check for spark but. I think it is something either carburetor related or I have a bad plug right right off or something. Let me know what you guys think, I'll share the video of it running and trying to stall out.
  3. the car wasn't even down 2 weeks, the gas is less than a month old, though I have a feeling I need to set my points gap. though finding a feeler gauge isn't easy atm
  4. This is what it does. it idles for a second then starts to stumble VID_20211105_173914285.mp4
  5. the video is eh. I do better with actual point in the right direction. I try watching yt vids and it doesn't help me identify where I am at
  6. I made sure it wasn't, I swapped them all over 1 at a time to make sure of that. as it's now running and revs up just fine, I think the point gap is too much
  7. I just don't know if I need to move the points around a bit or what. but it's not happy idling at all, unless choked which brings up the idle. the other thing could be the carburetor that is so nasty on the outside and could probably use a rebuild.
  8. she doesn't want to stay running, I may need to play with the points some more. Any ideas. Timing hasn't been touched at all. Just points, condenser, cap and rotor. VID_20211104_161742077.mp4
  9. Well, it's back up and running but it wants to stall, didn't change timing at all, but I did get the cap and rotor, points and condenser and it's running. But now it's idle is crap and it's stalling, any idea what is causing it
  10. I've yet to do anything other than hook the wires where they are supposed to go on the ignition coil. I do know how to clean points as I've watched enough junkyard digs and channels like that. I was looking at getting a tune up kit which is cap, rotor, points, and condenser. but first I want to try removing the melted piece of wire and making sure it actually has proper connection to the metal part. Probably gonna order the tune up kit as the car could use it. that is technically the last of the original ignition system as far as engine bay side of things
  11. well points aren't welded together and the only thing that looks off about it is that one wire that looks a little melted and shiny
  12. what smoked was the long black wire that goes into the distributor, the only thing possibly dead is a condenser coil. I am just asking what rebuild kit to look for for the future. as I just put fresh plugs into it and the ones that came out were a little fouled. and after hooking up everything right it's still dead, which confirms what I thought about the condenser coil being dead. I want to be able to properly tune it, and where it's getting to be cold outside I'd rather have the gaskets and stuff vs freezing my hands off working with a dirty carburetor.
  13. I am getting the condenser coil today as it's not super expensive, also gonna look into a carb kit as it probably could use it, considering all the grime on it, as well as tuning the screws on the front doesn't do much unless I run them in to about 1 3/4 turns out. Anyway, what kit do I need as I am not great at finding out exact info? (Ps I'm not good with wording on google search and I'm only 22
  14. ok so I replaced my coil as it was arcing bad, and when went to start it it didn't start and something was smoking, anyone can tell me what goes to what side of the coil leads? the top one is negative the lower towards the valve cover is positive. I have my suspicion that the wires are not on the right one and I need to know what goes where, and before anyone says look it up. I can't find a wiring harness diagram for the car. at least without buying one
  15. Here's a video of it running. No tires on it atm but yeah. Gonna get some work done soon, most likely body work to the front of the hood so I don't cut my fingers as the release lever is next to sharp metal InShot_20211007_155329017.mp4
  16. It runs, and should drive. I need to get some tires on it as the ones it has are crap, and none are matching, and one's blown and shredded. I have tires for it but no money to get it mounted and balanced
  17. my issue is I need to fix this thing as it's my only hope for transportation to get a job, there's not much where I live for work. I want to go into detailing or a tire shop. Probably gonna get a cheap harbor freight test light when I can I still need to get 2 speakers for the kick panels as that's where I want to put them
  18. I appreciate the help tho. Not very good at wording things in google and my ability to search isn't great when I've been fried. Was working on my friend's second gen ram and helped him put a new trans mount bushing. Not fun. And I mostly need the key signal as I won't be using the stock wires for the speakers. For shits I'm trying some speakers I had. Old NEC speakers, just placeholders plus I have the wiring ran and have basically no budget to get anything as I don't have income and nobody has donated to the gofundme I have going for this car.
  19. aight. I haven't started wiring. but yeah., it had one deck speaker in the dash and rear It has a center speaker up front in the dash, and a rear one to the passenger side of the rear deck
  20. I don't think my stock radio works, tried hooking speakers to the stock radio and go nothing, no signs of life. these are what I have. are those three plugs. my other question is for a more modern replacement, would I put the backlight wire also to the power wire? one of my older friends on facebook said yellow was power
  21. yet the blue wire runs to the rear and plugs into the deck speaker and has a gray wire to that plug as well. I'll get pics shortly
  22. I don't see anything for the radio on that diagram.
  23. I am putting an aftermarket radio and speakers in, and am wondering what color wire is the power signal for from the original. Is it turned on with the key? am at the starting stages of wiring in my pioneer unit and am interested to know what is what.
  24. I don't have any money to get a manual or diagram. what is the ignition power signal to the radio? like what color wire.
