75 GP getting back on the road

Featured Replies

I have a 75 GP that I'm getting back on the road after sitting over 15 years. I'm going to be VERRY active on this site. I don't even know what my poor car (her name is May) is going to need. I changed the oil for the first time in over 25 years, and the struggle was real on just the filter. I had a PF24 on it and replaced it with a PF61 and 5 quarts of 20w50. I need to do a coolant flush. What is everyone running for coolant now?

i actively buy NOS AC oil filters and spark plugs when i find them at a swap meets. You can also used an AC PF30. Fram, Wix, and Puralator filter equivalents also work.

As for coolant, I recommend using traditional Prestone or Peak green 50/50 antifreeze since that is what you car calls for.

What I took off.

Nothing wrong with a PF24, so long as you can find another one. A PF30 will work in a pinch. Stick with the PF24 if you can get them.

What is everyone using for coolant?

As mentioned by Frosty above, the standard green antifreeze in a 50-50 blend with water. If you are really concerned, pour in some extra anti rust compound and water pump lubricant. I add these to my LS engines.

Sorry I didn't see his reply. Relly I'm surprised. I would have thought the orange or mabe even the new blue/purple stuff.

The key to antifreeze is changing it, especially the green stuff every two years but I also re-do the orange stuff every two years. I run the orange Dexcool in my LS engines plus the antirust and water pump lube in everything. Its compatible with the green and the orange antifreeze and I despise the galvanic corrosion with the dissimilar aluminum and steel metals in my LS engines.

The internal rust and corrosion I've seen in the junk yard engines that I've looked at for a rebuild swap or picking parts is simply awful.

Yea I've got some pretty severe corotation from 20year old green coolant. I added a bottle of radiator flush, and my plan is to heat cycle it a few times then rinse a few times. My water pump doesnt seem to be moving a lot of volume. The pump is new ish. I replaced it before I stopped driving it. Any suggestions on a good water pump?

See if the thermostat does not fully open. This is far easier to replace and less expensive than a water pump.
