Welcome to FP! We love pics around here. Chat it in the forums!

So what has been done to your ride? Is she stock, modified, etc.? Tell us all about her!

Welcome! Anxious to hear and see more about your ‘70 Formula as I had one myself. Wish I would have kept it (along with a few others).

Hello Mark,

And welcome to the group. Nice looking car and I certainly wished I had one like it back in high school. Please post often and we might actually be chatting about Pontiac vehicles and all things related to the brand.

We are an exceptionally nice group of people around here. And if we had friends, they would tell you that, LOL.

It's all stock, and with about 8 hours to finish up the resto, my 400 motor chewed up up the # 2 exhaust lifter and cam lobe!! Rely a bummer. This car has been at 3 different guys to do my restoration for 8 (yes 8) years and now Im trying to figure out the best way to get a 400 or a 455 and even possible a stroked Pontiac motor. Looking for suggestions of a really good motor builder.

I really appreciate all of the quick responses. Thank you all!

Can't say Pontiac engines without sayin Butler. Welcome to your new obsession...talk talk it up in the forum. Jump in anywhere. Did you bend the pushrod leading to the failure of the lifter and following destruction of the cam? You will need to pull the pan, check for metal in pan and in the oil pickup. Last check the filter. Cut the top off and look inside for metal shavings. Now would be the time to check your compression in all cyls to see if further rebuilding is necessary. Hope you get lucky and only have to replace the valvetrain.

Didn't bend a pushrod but I pull the motor and have it at an engine shop. Now I don't know what kind of shards are in there. Definitely going with a roller cam.It might even change the whole motor out. I'd really like to go to a 455 or a stroked motor. I've been waiting so long to get this bird flying again

It’s possible to bore and stroke your 400 into a 455. A new Eagle crank, the proper bore, and new connecting rods, and you’re there.

Do yourself a favor, get some roller rocker arms for better valve train longevity. This will complement the roller cam and lifters.

Which heads do you have? Even if you can’t afford aluminum heads, a triple angle valve job and some light porting and polishing in the bowl area will help your Poncho breath better.

I might just go that route. I'm just waiting for him to tear the block down to check it out first. Who makes the best aluminum heads for Pontiac? An eagle crank kit set a rods and pistons - sounds like my best option. Thank you Frosty!

The answer is it depends on your planned use of the car. Edelbrock is great for street cars. Kaufman Racing Equipment and DCI Motorsports make heads too but these are more geared to high end/race applications with the price tag to go with it. This is not to say you can’t use a KRE or DCI head on the street because you can. Is it a wise choice from a cost/benefit perspective?

The Kaufman D port heads are good street heads, and only about $100 more expensive than Pontiac Edelbrock heads, and the customer support the Kaufman brothers can give you are worth the small price difference IMO. But I have not spoke with them in 5+ years as my job had me on the road during the big Pontiac event at Norwalk Ohio.

I also used to save on shipping due the shops location is only about 2 hours away from me. But E-head will work well also.
