Center Console 1963 Bonneville Convertible

I am hoping that someone could send me a picture of the center console for my car. As I remember it, there was a piece of plastic ( or perhaps rubber) trim that went around the bottom of the console. I do not have this piece. The issue is that the bolts holding the console to the floor make a "lump" in the carpet. I think the trim piece hid the bolts so the "lump" was not noticeable.

I also have a similar question about how the bolts which bolts the front bucket seat were covered. Just with carpet or was there another trim piece?

Thanks for any help

Note: I was with my father when he bought the car in 1962. It was the first car I drove in high school. It's sort of special to me. The car is in the shop right now getting the mechanicals fixed up. But the car looks great and even before it went into the shop I drove it from Sacramento to San Diego ( about 400 miles). Will post some pics when I get it back. At 79, I do not get on my back anymore. Maybe I am a wimp

Hello Sam,

And welcome to the group. Have you tried "Frank's Pontiac Parts" to see if they have this part? They dismantle more old Pontiac vehicles than anybody.

What is the part number for this trim piece? The 1963 Factory Assembly Manual will likely reveal the part number and a picture of what it looks like. With the part number, you can use the Hollander Interchange Manual for the years 1962, 63 and 64 to see if other GM vehicles used this same part - you might be pleasantly surprised.

Have you thought about making this part yourself or getting somebody to 3D print it? Could it be made in plain metal, chromed or stainless or printed in plastic? Could it be cut from a Masonite board or wood paneling? Thinking out loud here. If it is chrome, take a look at the You Tube videos on what people are doing with spray painting "Revell Chrome". If you make this part, at least you will have something while you continue to look for the real thing.

Then there's always this list:

Hey Sam, so I'm not sure if your 63 Bonniville used the same center console as my 63 Grand Prix. I did a quick internet search, and it said it did, but I'm still not sure. But here is my console from my 63 Grand Prix. There was no trim where the console meets the carpet on mine. The only plastic was at the rear underside of the console on the hump, I painted mine black to match the new carpet as you can see in the picture. If yours is the same I can get you more pictures if you need them buddy.

as far as the front bolts, there was nothing covering them except for the factory carpet on mine when I got it. Some changes had been made mechanically to mine before I got her, but the inside was still all stock. I hope this helps you Sam, can't wait to see pictures of her.

Wrongway

Your pics were great. This is a huge help already. Your console looks like even with the completely useless intake manifold vacuum gauge. Everything looks the same except you have AC. In any event, my car is getting some work done on the engine and it is about 60 miles from home. I am going to ask to have two pictures sent to me of the exact area I am thinking about. If you could look at your car (and possibly feel as well) when you get them I would appreciate it. I will explain my request when I send the pics

Thanks again. looks like you are sending me the rightway.

Anytime time Sam. Glad I could help justa let me know what else you need.

here are the pics. First I gotta say I did not realize how lousy my console looks. A project for another time...

So the photos show the flap that covers the bolt that holds the console to the floor. My questions to you are

  1. Can you see (or feel if you can 't get to the bolt) that there is a bolt in your car like in the pic? I have been wondering if an upholstery shop did a hack on the console when they put in new carpet.

  2. If you see or feel a bolt, is it obvious that is there now that I have drawn your attention to it or is it sort of invisible?

  3. Do you have a carpet pad of some sort under your carpet or is the carpet directly on the floor (or tunnel in this case) that softens the hump?

Thanks again. If I have been unclear, please ask.

I gotta say Sam, I'm confused by those brackets. I'm not saying that they aren't factory but mine doesn't have those and mine shows no signs where they could've been removed. Does the back of your console have brackets also? Or is there a hole on each side of the plastic riser an inch or two before the end of the console? I've also never seen that flap of carpet under the console that is covering the bolts on the hump. I replaced mine based on what I removed which I believed to be factory correct and by all the pictures I was able to find.

So when I removed the old carpeting it had a padding underneath it, I believe its call jute. So when I bought replacement carpeting it had an option for jute backing and that was what I ordered, and yes sir it does soften the hump and the floor quite a bit.

Let me know if there's anything else or I do have other pictures and can pull a seat if necessary to get more.

Thanks a lot. I am not surprised you did not find the bolt. I suspected it was a hack in my car. What you told me is evidence I was right.

With that said, I am going to go silent. As I said the car is 60 miles a away and I gotta get it back to dig into this.

You have been super helpful. I will send pics when I get the car back.

I went through my build pictures last night hoping to find a picture of my console out of the car. I wasn't able to find one. but I did find this picture of the tunnel while I was redoing the inside. It's the same picture one is justa blown up Sam. If you look at the front of the tunnel you can see there is no bolt holes where your bracket is. Hope this helps buddy.
