Family Road Trip 2025

Soon after the Louisville convention we began a trip to Wisconsin to celebrate our niece’s high school graduation, also stopping at several points of interest along the way there and back.

First stop, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Great display of most of the rock and pop music icon’s clothes, guitars, albums, music, and personal items. I say “most” because they seemed to have skipped an entire genre I was hoping to see, the early 60s surf/hot rod songs and artists, especially glaring given the recent passing of Brian Wilson.

Next was Beyer Field, home of the Rockford Peaches. This had a personal family interest in that my mother-in-law played in the league for 2 years.

After the family get-together we took the high-speed ferry from Milwaukee to Grand Rapids to start the journey back home.

The Pontiac Transportation Museum was next on our agenda. I will post a few pics even though some of our members here are familiar with it. Tim Dye gave us a personal tour along with behind the scenes areas and future plans as work progresses.

The Oakland Pontiac sign in the last picture was donated by the widow of my late friend Frank Kemp.

I could have spent a lot more time there, but we were on a schedule to see more sights on the road home.

Following PTM, The Henry Ford Museum. Too large to see it all, but did what we could. Here are a few highlights, including a very special T-shirt. Seems like Ford knew who had “a better idea”.

More great shots 31pontiac. Thanks again for sharing.

I will be at the PTM tomorrow night for a convention meeting. Is there anything there that you didn't get to see because you were pressed for time? The fact that Tim was there and gave the tour is great too.

While at the Henry Ford, where you able to see the Abraham Lincoln chair from Ford's theater? This is the chair he was assasomated in and still has his blood on the fabric. So the Kennedy limo and Lincoln chair within a few feet of each other is truly amazing. Also, did you see the Oscar Meyer Weenermobile or the Rosa Parks bus?

Gee Tim! You should have honked when you went to the rock hall! You had to drive right by me!

They did have the California surf artist as a display, but they change things around from time to time. I do agree that like the Beatles, some folks like the beach boys, Jan & Dean & other should be a permanent display.

Ditto on the driveby, right here in PONTIAC and we missed you. Know it was HOT out, but did you get a shot of the mural at the PTM? Glad you were able to meet Tim. Safe trip home.

Frosty, I think we saw pretty much of the museum and behind the scenes. Tim even had me start the GM bus behind the museum. I would have liked to spend more time playing on the fantastic video display projected onto the wall and studying the display cases packed with memorabilia, but my wife had a strict schedule we had to maintain😬.

We did see each of the attractions you mentioned. Another display we all enjoyed was Your Place in Time.

Last Indian, I did blow the horn didn’t you hear us?🤣🤣

I sure would’ve liked to see the surf music display. Also, in the heavy metal area (unless I missed it) I saw no mention of Iron Butterfly and In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, IMHO the quintessential heavy metal song, preceding many of the groups who claim to be first. Again, just my opinion.

Justa6, Sorry about the drive-by, and yes, we did get a shot of the mural with me in the picture, but I don’t have it on my phone.

I am going to be at the PTM tonight for a convention planning meeting. Do I need to photograph all the different slides from the big screen for you?

Thanks, but not necessary Frosty, I will get there again!

After The Henry Ford, we drove to the Flight 93 Memorial near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Very nicely done, but a grim reminder of the events that took place that day.

The next stop was Fallingwater, a summer getaway designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Kaufman family.

After that tour, it was off to Richmond, Virginia to drop my daughter at her house and next morning head for home, a six hour ride. When we got home, we had a day and a half to do laundry, mow the grass and pack for Norwalk.🤪

Good thing! The project was turned off when I got there.

I had a good conversation with Larry Crider and Art Barrnet from POCI though.
