Hi everyone I’m just looking at buying a 1960 Pontiac bonniville but it has a speedometer issue,it doesn’t read correctly and the needle keeps flicking from left to right.can someone please advise me on what could be causing this,and how hard it would be to fix.cheers Wayne

I'm sure the guys will chime in here, but mine was the same. Unscrew the speedo cable from behind the speedo and clean & lube it as best you can. If you're really keen, remove the entire thing and clean it properly along it's entire length. A little grease thoroughly applied the whole length and you SHOULD be done.

Hello,

  Fitzy is correct.  Almost certainly its a dirty speedometer cable.  Check the shop manual to see what they recommend as a lubricant but it might not be a grease.  Most speedometer cables need a dry graphite lubricant that won't attract future dirt and a repeat of the same problem.

But again, check the shop manual.  In the meantime, unscrew the speedometer cable at the distant end until you can get the cable and sheath cleaned and re-lubricated so the the spinning portion of the cable is not damaged by any constrained twisting.
