Hello everyone,

my name is Lucas, i‘m 21 years old and from southern germany.

My heart beats for Pontiacs and Jeeps and my story begins even before i was born.

in the end of the 90s my dad bought a 85 Trans Am T-Top. He repainted it, made the interior matching colour, installed 89 GTA rims, a dynomax exhaust system and swapped the engine with a goodwrench 350.

Sadly because of ridiculous german taxes and because of problems with our bank he had to put it in the garage for the last 8 years. He finally re-registered it last month and i was finally able to drive it.

Then the worst case happened last saturday. I worked on my Cherokee on friday and wasn‘t finished by the evening so my dad allowed me to take the bird home with me.

The next morning i took it out to go back to my parent‘s place and after 10 minutes of driving smoke started to appear out of the console. I just stopped at the side of the road and got out when it caught fire. It burned fully to the ground.

 

But this was not the only Pontiac, we owned. My mum had a 94 Sunbird for several years followed in 2006 by a 93 Grand Prix sedan. When the Grand Prix‘ engine lost oil my parents put it aside. I started fixing it by myself and got into wrenching. I wanted it to be my first car. 
One week before my 18th birthday (legal age to drive alone in germany) my mum took it out and someone ran into the door and drove away. You must know that a 93 Grand Prix is a very uncommon car in germany. From 2006 to now i never saw another one than ours. I organised a door in the states and got it shipped. It cost about 1.200€ (1.300$) to repair (700€/763$ shipping alone). When it was finally fixed i loved to drive it. Then i got my cherokee. Last year i sold the Grand Prix.

 

Now that my dad‘s bird is also gone we are going to look for a 98-02 T/A T-Top or Convertible. We just need another Pontiac.

 

Well, that‘s my story. I guess i haven‘t had that much luck with pontiacs but i still love them.

It's a shame what happened to both the Trans Am and Grand Prix. At least you were able to repair and enjoy the Grand Prix.

Any idea what caused the fire in the Trans Am? Faulting wiring?

We'd love to hear what happens next with the search for the new Trans Am.

Hello Frosty, another firebird driver told me he once had a jammed window regulator switch which almost caused a fire (it was stuck in the „open“ position because of dust) He luckily found the problem in time and pressed at the button to unjam it.

 

since the smoke started from the console and the only electrical stuff was the shifter light (lights were turned of when it happened) and the window switches i think this could be a very likely explanation.

 

I‘m also looking forward for the new one. I always dreamed about a late 90s/early 00s Trans Am since it will be about as old as i am and i also love the double pop up Headlights especially with the Ram Air Hood. We only need to find the right one

Welcome to Forever Pontiac.  Soooo sorry about the luck you have had.  Glad you and your family are OK.  Could have been much worse.   Keep us up on your progress in finding a new Pontiac.

Sorry to hear about your Pontiacs. Like JUSTA said, glad your family was ok after that.

Oh man, losing your Pontiac like that is terrible.  I can't imagine being there and not being able to do anything about it.  I carry a fire extinguisher in my G-6.  I am disabled, having trouble with my legs that effects my mobility.  I think if ever I had a bad accident and the car caught on fire, I wouldn't have enough time to get out - so I am planning putting out the fire before it burns up  both me and the car.  My G-6 is a 2007 GT "retractable convertible" that has about 87K miles of it.  The car is almost perfect - as it is a daily driver, I would call it a 3+ car.  I drive it about 2K per year and because of that I have been considering finding it a new home.  This is kind of a rare car - the best I can find is that they made somewhere between 4 to 20 thousand of them in 2007.  It's been a Colorado all it's life.  Because Colorado is such a dry climate, it has no rust.  It is my baby - it needs a new daddy.   I need to get pictures of the car on this site.  My name is Barry - if interested let me know.

Hello Barry,

first of all thank you for your offer but i think my dad wants a Firebird again.

His next Pontiac is supposed to be a fun car so a V8/Rear Wheel Drive is a must.

 

The G6 Convertible has been on my personal bucket list for several years but i can‘t afford it for myself at the moment, especially because i would have to pay shipping, taxes, inspection and registration fees. I‘m sorry that i have to turn you down, but i wish the best for you to find a good buyer.
