2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

-

From our “You’re still here?” file comes news that the Hyundai Genesis coupe has ceased production. As mentioned in The Globe and Mail and confirmed to us by Hyundai spokesman Derek Joyce, the news of the Genesis coupe’s retirement, some seven years after its 2009 introduction as a 2010 model, is hardly surprising. But it happened, so we’re reporting it.

-

With 2+2 seating, a choice of turbo four-cylinder or V-6 power, and most important, rear-wheel drive, the Genesis was aimed at the Nissan Z and the long-gone Mazda RX-8. We missed that memo and ran it in a comparison test against a V-6 Chevrolet Camaro. Even with two facelifts over seven years, the Genesis coupe admittedly didn’t shake up the sports-car world. It was an important car for Hyundai, however, whose sportiest offering before 2009 was the humble Tiburon. Hyundai displayed highly modified Genesis coupes at motorsports events and the annual SEMA show, boosting its credibility in the enthusiast and racing communities.

--

After such a long tenure in the ever-shrinking coupe market segment, it’s high time for the Genesis coupe to fade away, especially since Hyundai will henceforth use the Genesis name for its new luxury division. A coupe is among the half-dozen or so Genesis models that will appear over the next four years, as we reported in May, but that model will be among the last to arrive, sometime around 2020.
