If you’re hankering for a 600-hp BMW M5 but didn’t manage to snag one of the 30 units of the 30th-Anniversary BMW M5 that came to the U.S. last year, here’s your second chance. A new Pure Metal Silver Limited Edition M5 is headed to our shores, with similar performance tweaks that bring the 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine up to 600 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque (25 horsepower and 16 lb-ft more than a standard M5 with the Competition Package). Once again, this specially outfitted M5 will be quite an exclusive proposition, with only 50 cars available to U.S. customers.

The special-edition model’s name refers to its exterior color, called Pure Metal Silver, which is unique to this M5. BMW says the color is applied with a layering process that creates an especially reflective surface. Five-spoke 20-inch wheels (a $1300 option on the standard M5) are also part of the visual package, along with black trim for the kidney grilles and faux-carbon-fiber trim for the exhaust outlets. The aluminum-trimmed interior comes with a “Pure Metal Silver 1/50″ badge denoting the car as one of the 50 special-edition models.

The Pure Metal Silver edition’s performance upgrades are nearly identical to the Europe-only M5 Competition Edition that was also just revealed. Extra boost for the twin-turbo V-8 accounts for the extra power and torque, and all of the tweaks from the standard M5’s $7300 Competition Package—namely a firmer suspension setup that’s lower by 0.4 inch, retuned steering, and a revised “M Dynamic” stability-control mode—are included as well. The M Driver’s Package is included, too, which raises the car’s top speed from 155 mph to 190 mph, and includes a day at BMW’s high-performance driving school in either South Carolina or California. A manual gearbox is off the table, however, as the dual-clutch seven-speed automatic is the only transmission choice.

For all of its exclusivity and standard equipment, this rare version of the M5 almost seems like a bargain at $131,895 (a similarly equipped standard M5 without the power boost or the silver paint runs around $120,000). But buyers should prepare to act quickly when the Pure Metal Silver editions go on sale in August, as the 50-unit run should make this special M5 hard to come by.
