Car and Driver: Hyundai Offering Owners Free Downloadable Upgrade to Android Auto, Apple CarPlay

Hyundai Apple CarPlay Android Auto

In today’s automotive pricing sphere, it’s rare to get something for nothing, but Hyundai is offering owners of select 2015, 2016, and 2017 model-year cars a free upgrade that adds Android Auto and Apple CarPlay phone-mirroring integration. For those not keen on DIY electronic upgrades, no matter how simple, Hyundai dealers will perform the upgrade for a fee.

This isn’t the first time Hyundai has offered its owners a free infotainment upgrade—during its rollout of Android Auto integration last year to new 2015 model-year Sonatas the company made the upgrade available to existing ’15 Sonata owners via free download. For this latest swath of freedom, Hyundai is making Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (the Apple integration being new to Hyundai’s lineup in general) available to owners of these vehicles:

-

Sonata: 2015 model year, with navigation; 2016 model year, with navigation or display audio system.

-

Genesis sedan: 2015 and 2016 models with 8.0-inch touchscreen and navigation.

-

Elantra GT: 2016 models with navigation.

-

Tucson: 2016 models with navigation.

-

Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport: 2017 models with either the 7.0-inch touchscreen or the 8.0-inch touchscreen with navigation.

According to Hyundai, completing the upgrade requires the car’s VIN number and either a USB drive or the SD card from the built-in navigation system (where applicable, more information at MyHyundai.com). Outside of the upgrade-compatible Hyundai vehicles listed here, the only new Hyundai that offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from the factory (as in, so new as to not enable retroactive, downloadable upgrades) is the 2017 Elantra.
