Nearly 900,000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks are subject to a recall to fix a defect with the front-seat seatbelts. General Motors says the issue affects 895,232 2014-2015 model-year Silverado and Sierra trucks in the U.S., around 3000 of which are still unsold on dealer lots.

The problem relates to a steel cable that connects the seatbelt to the vehicle; the cable bends when the driver exits and entering the seat, and can eventually separate from the vehicle over time. The fix, to be performed free of charge at dealers, involves installing a new pusher bracket for the tensioner, enlarging the seat’s side shield opening, and, in some cases, replacing the seatbelt tensioner assembly. Dealers will fix all unsold inventory before the trucks are sold. The defect was found through warranty data, and GM claims that there are no reports of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to the seatbelt defect.

This isn’t the first safety recall for the current generation of GM’s full-size pickups. The Silverado and Sierra have previously been recalled for defects with ignition switches, floor mats, brake pedals, and Takata-supplied airbags.
