Car and Driver: Green Pleaser: Teaser Photo Portends Next Toyota Prius Model

Toyota’s Prius family is about to grow again, and the automaker has just released a teaser photo of its newest member’s derrière. It looks leaner and visually wider than the shapes that generally come to mind when we think of the Prius clan.

Although the image is blacked out in typical teaser-photo style, the stylized lighting stretches wide across the rear and traces along the decklid. One also can make out a low roofline and backlight. It’s not clear if this means there’s a new body style in the works or if the shadows and new taillamp design are playing visual tricks. Either way, it appears to go its own way in terms of rear graphics, as the shape of the taillamps differs from those of the latest Prius already on the road. Toyota is using the phrase “Intelligent Eco-Tech” in conjunction with the vehicle, which may signal the introduction of the next-generation Prius plug-in model.

Indeed, while the core model is all-new, the rest of the Prius lineup is aging—the Prius C and V in particular—so you can expect Toyota to introduce variants as quickly as it can. We’ll have complete details on the new Prius model when the drape comes off at the 2016 New York auto show next week.2016 New York Auto Show Full Coverage
