The California Air Resources Board has rejected Volkswagen’s proposed fix for its 2.0-liter diesel engines, which exceed U.S. emissions limits, according to a report in Automotive News.

-

Volkswagen says the rejected fix was submitted to regulators in December. The California state agency said the proposal was “incomplete, substantially deficient, and falls far short of meeting the legal requirements.” For its part, the EPA chimed in, agreeing with CARB that “Volkswagen has not submitted an approvable recall plan to bring the vehicles into compliance and reduce pollution. EPA has conveyed this to the company previously.” It has not been revealed what Volkswagen had proposed to the regulators.

VW continues to meet with both CARB and the EPA as it works toward a solution. The company also has to submit a fix for its 3.0-liter V-6 TDI engines. Volkswagen recently extended its “goodwill package”—a $500 Visa gift card and $500 in credit to spend at dealerships—to 2009–2016 Touareg owners with the 3.0-liter TDI engine. When the package initially was offered last fall, it was for owners of the 2.0-liter TDI only.
