Car and Driver: Mercedes-Benz to Offer G-wagen Fancification Program

The Mercedes-Benz G-wagen is in a class by itself. Severely lacking in its road manners despite a recent and comprehensive update, it is a superior off-roader—and an awesome fashion statement. And it’s that latter quality that we suspect its civilian customers care about most (it is also very popular with armed forces around the globe). Those customers get even more now, with a new individualization program called “designo manufaktur.”

Offering new materials and color combinations, the program features a few pre-configured interior and exterior packages, hand-finished at the Magna Steyr prodiction site in Graz, Austria. Standalone options include several new wheel styles in black, and bodyside strips that can be executed with a carbon-fiber inlay on AMG versions. The Night Package, offered on other Mercedes-Benz cars, migrates to the G-wagen as well; it replaces several chrome and body-colored parts with black-metallic trim. Mercedes-Benz also is adding new colors to the portfolio, and the roof can now be painted black.

Above and beyond those options, “designo manufaktur” offers tailor-made solutions that can make the G-wagen essentially a unique vehicle. Customers willing to dole out a hefty premium can have their G painted any color they wish. Daimler is happy to build it, but they won’t take responsibility for the style. As the press release points out, it’s “a question of personal taste.”
