13A905.jpgThere's been a mild shakeup at the top of the ranks at Mercedes-Benz. Joachim Schmidt, the nearly 65-year-old Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Mercedes passenger car operations and member of the Board of Management, has opted to retire. His replacement will be Ola Källenius, a 44-year-old Swede that has been running AMG since April 2010. The formal changeover will take place on October 1.

Schmidt joined Daimler-Benz in 1979 in passenger car development, although he's been involved in the sales and marketing departments for the past 20 years. He joined the Mercedes-Benz Board of Management in October of 2009.

Ola Källenius had what might be one of the coolest jobs in the world - he was chairman of Mercedes-AMG, the legendary high-performance tuning haus where V8 engines are as common as staplers and paperclips. Before that, he was the plant manager at the Mercedes factory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He also ran MB's high-performance engine facility in the UK and spent some time working for McLaren.

No successor has been announced for Källenius's position at AMG. A full press release can be found below.
