The Classic King

I had the privilege of going with some friends to see a new play at the Purple Rose Theater in Chelsea Michigan. The play was called ‘The Classic King’.

It’s about a fictional used and classic car dealership called Starlight Classic Cars, at the corner of Grand River and 11 1/2 Mile Roads in SE Michigan.

It was fun through out the show. The dealership hours were:

Monday-Wednesday-Friday 7 to 7

Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday 8 to 8

Sundays - 9 to 9

Holidays - 10 to 10

There are four characters total, three salesmen and the owner/general manager of the dealership.

Each character took turns doing a ‘car commercial’, the cheesy kind local dealers do. There was a St Patricks Day. One of the salesman was an ex-con ‘how would you like the thrill of out running 24 police cars and 2 helicopters? What a life time changing event that would be, right?’

One did a take on the world hunger commercial. Classic cars have a dream. They want to be owned, loved, given a tune-up, a charged battery and a warm garage. Won’t you help their dreams come true? Won’t you please help?

One of the best lines was “that car has more hits on it than a winning lottery ticket. “

Or

“That car is a U F O. You hit it, you f*cking own it!”

The play is directed by famous actor and director Jeff Daniels, from Dumb and Dumber fame.

The Purple Rose theater only seats 168 people. The stage is the center of the theater and seating is on three sides in a U-shape. Recordings and photos of the performance were prohibited but I did get pictures of the stage before the show began.

The show was funny but didn’t have a happy ending. There was a ton of car guy speak/lingo, which was even more enjoyable to me.

If this play ever comes to your town or it becomes a movie, I encourage you to see it.
