To EFI or not to EFI?

Featured Replies

I am looking to boost the performance of my 1976 TA with the 400 engine. Engine guy is recommending to add the Holly Sniper 2 EFI as the first step. Has anyone gone this route? Benefit or unnecessary? Input appreciated.

1st step upgrade? I would go headers, mid range cam and intake that wouldn't require rocker arm or lifter mods. Will sound awesome and a nice boost in the seat and Much cheaper than EFI. EFI will boost performance, fuel economy, easier starts and appears to be a bolt on mod. BUT...Don't forget you need to drop the tank and the expense of upgrading your fuel pump and fuel line system to high pressure, including a return line. Make it yours N have fun.

The other thing is drilling a hole in your exhaust system for an O2 sensor and running a wire to it!

Fuel filtration is important. The injector opening is smaller than a carburetor jet, so it is ideal to use a pre and post fuel pump fuel filters.

Hello,

The Sniper likes a clean and steady 13.8 volts DC with a low radio frequency noise engine compartment and little alternating current leakage ripple. Some cars have noisy, spiky alternator diodes and voltage regulation that drives the Sniper computer nutty. Even the Holley people on the Holley Forum admit that it is susceptible to radio frequency interference. Poor quality spark plug wire insulation, too wide of a spark plug gap, running the Sniper wires too close to a plug wire, sometimes an electric radiator fan - all can generate electronic interference here. The EFISystemPro.com site has a good discussion.

A quick Google search will find these discussions. I sayeth none of this to discourage you because I love my EFI vehicles. Moving to EFI is not a trivial decision and you need to know what you are facing.
