Featured Replies

ok as I kid I had no problem keeping my windows clean now it's a pain, I use paper towels and it leaves a streak same thing with using newspaper, I even tried the wipes that come in a plastic container and still getting streaks what do you use that works?

I have the same problem. Tried a number of different glass cleaners over the years and none worked as good as glasstop stove cleaner. A little more work to use, but I think it works well. The glass also seems easier to clean the next time it needs cleaning.

I use a combination of paper shop towels and microfiber towels. I clean the windows with shops towels or sometimes 0000 steel wool to get the window shield clean. I wipe the windshield twice with the shop towels. I then use the microfiber towel. I wipe the microfiber towel in the opposite direction of the paper towel. If I have any newspaper, I might make one last wipe down with it.

I am retiring at the end of the yesr. Does that count Fitzy?

Good on you! Think of the hours of window cleaning you will then throw yourself into. We'll be expecting a detailed report on each & every 'experience,' replete with materials & products used. Oh boy, I wish I could retire.

Actually, I can retire whenever I want but don't want to be cleaning windows.

Be careful what you wish for Fitzy! You might get it! Hours of endless video drivel of me cleaning glass until it sounds like someone scrapping their finger nails across a chalkboard! Riveting stuff!

I'd like to see the YouTube channel and detailed experimental writeup.

A little along the lines of 31's glasstop stove cleaner. Meguair's ultimate polish, which is a little similar to glasstop cleaner. Inside & out. Than I use Meguair's ultimate detailed. Than if there is any haze or streaking in the sun I followup with, wait for it; Meguair's perfect clarity glass cleaner.

FYI, when using glass cleaner do not use microfiber clothes. Use a soft terrycloth towel. In my experience they do a way better job of cleaning & removing contaminants. Micro fiber has its place, but it also has its limits. Example, when I hand polish my cars or even a machine application I use terrycloth towels to remove the residue, but microfiber to apply & remove my liquid wax. Yet the microfiber to apply the wax is substantial different than the one I use to remove it.

Windex sprayed directly on an old Tshirt esp inside. Same for outside, but also use RainX to finish.

Wow, this has been a LOT of talk about glass cleaning. So, can I ask, why is the glass of today so much more difficult to clean then say 30 years ago?

  • Popular Post

The glass is the same - but the peeps have changed!

  • Popular Post

Today's crew thinks there's an app for that!

While peeps have changed & most think there's an app for that all being very true. Glass has changed! If you have a 80's or older & it's original glass it has good silicate sand! If it's newer it has a much poorer quality of silicate sand! Additives that were never used before & coatings that are suppose to make it better, but they actually cause more adhesion of ozone to the surface!

Thanks for your detailed explanation Last Indian. I have long suspected a similar situation with windshield wiper blades. I never had to replace them as often as I do now. Even if I step up to pay for a “premium” brand , I am lucky to get more than a year and a half of good service from them.

And the stupid prices tagged on this plastic junk. Forget the chain stores. Mazza's my local parts store still has real metal ANCO wipers, and real replacement blades. For the win!!!

31, this started about 20 to 25 years ago. All the tree huggers whine about "climate change" what a joke! You know CO2! Well guess what? While that is all a giant load of crap, one of the largest man made CO2 producers of CO2 is the making of cement! Not concrete, but cement! More than all the vehicle pollution globally. And; it's a big and, all the cement production, which has increased every single year for the past 100 years & it doubled from 1985 to 2000. This increase caused a shortage in silicate sand! So much so that by the early 2000 there was a concern it might cause a global shortage!

As a result of that & the stupidity of auto manufacturers to have a windshield do more things than just be a windshield has created a cascade of chemical changes in the glass. The first thing they changed was the PVB membrain between the two glass plates that makeup the safety structure of the windshield. All these changes have resulted in chemical outgasing, which is part of what I was specking of. But it goes deeper than that, but I'll leave it there.

Copy that buddy! I usually JustA replace the rubber blade with a quality rubber blade not their stupid composite material crap.

They will be around for years to come, but they are getting hard to find. Orielly's, Auto Zone N all the other chain stores won't put them on the shelves, because they are metal. Will last forever and still way cheaper than todays plastic crap, they wanted $50 for wipers on the wifes GMC.
