A Fix for Stripped Speed Nut Stud

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Well, it's that time of year to start looking the Goat over to see what needs to be done before cruising season.

I thought I'd start with the grille on the driver side.  It has been loose long before we bought the car.

I have the grille on the bench and the speed nut stud is stripped.

I was thinking of adding material to the stud by soldering and sanding it back into shape.

I have no idea if it will work but I don't see a lot of options.

Anyone know of a way to fix this?

Thanks!

A good thing to Try...

Most of the Metal trim like that..Is made out of Low Quality Cheap Cast  Pot Metal...And when you try to get Metal Hot enough to be able to silver Solder it The base metal Can reach the melting point and Basically Vaporize before it's Hot enough to Effectively Solder it...A good Suggestion...Would be to..Wrap the offending Stud with a couple of Rounds of Teflon Pipe Tape to expand the size of the stud...Then use the Correct size Nylock (self locking) Nut And Carefully Thead it Straight on to the stud..Hopefully the nut Will actually Grab...Snugly tighten up...If it does Don't try to over Torque it...It's Definitely worth a try...And will Not cause any more Damage If it Doesn't work...

Thank you TLBT.  I will try that instead of soldering.  I'll try to thread the Nylock while the grille is on the bench to see if it will catch.

Hi ReveredGTO. I don't think you know this, but I have a complete front end for the 71-72, including the grilles and Endura bumper. Next time you are up in the Flint area, you might want to check out my stash.

Sounds good!  Tonight while looking for my teflon tape I found my heat shrink so I put that over the studs.  Fingers crossed it works
