Interesting.

Two observations:

First, the LS3 is a corporate V8 and not a true Pontiac-built engine (it's still a fine engine). Most Pontiac-built V8s had a redline between 6000-6500, including the Super Dutys and HO motors.

Second, the highest revving Pontiac-built engine is the OHC 6 with a red line of 6700 for the 4-bbl version.

Although they weren't mass produced and Not available to the general public...The Pontiac Short deck 303 CID...4.250 bore...2.840 stroke...(big bore short stroke) Race engine will Reliably turn 8000 plus RPMs...The (NASCAR) 366 CID Pontiac Race  engine...4.153 Bore × 3.375 stroke...Theoretically... Should operate close to the same RPM range as the 303 engine...But with more low end torque...

I agree Two Lane, but as you mentioned, they are part of Pontiac;s unobtainuim list of rare items. So few 303s or 366s were ever made, that it is practically impossible to find one without spending a huge fortune in cash just to buy the critical pieces. Plus these were pure racing spec engines, or at least that was what they were intended for - Trans Am/SCCA racing.
