1961 gauges?

Hi again,

My original clock isn't working on my '61 Bonneville, & it appears as if my speedo has shit itself (thought it was the cable - pulled it out & greased it, ran for 100kms perfectly, then made a heap of noise & the needle no longer moves. However the odometer is still rolling, so I suspect the speedo drive unit itself?)

Any suggestions where in Australia (preferable SE Queensland) I should look for assistance with these?

Or...Are they usually not repairable?

Your suggestions will be appreciated.

Thankxx 🙏

Paul, first you do mean the actual gage in the cluster does not work? ! Right? Also when you say you greased it, you mean you actually used grease? If so where? You do not use grease, oil or any other kind of viscose lubricant on the speedometer (gage) or cable! Ever! The speedometer cable drives a magnet that sets inside a fixed case. There is a gap between the magnet & the needle fixture that causes the needle to hover at a given point based on the speed of the cable rpm. This entire assembly needs to be clean & dry. Plus the proper gap maintained. Any grease that would get to this assembly would negate that function. The fact that you say the odometer still work says the cable turns, the magnet on the end of the cable turns & drives the pinion gear shaft that turns the spur gear that turns the odometer. The only place you should ever use any lubricant is at the gear points of the odometer! And even than it should be only if necessary & it should be a graphite lubricant, but not a dry power graphite.

The noise you heard was more than likely the magnet hitting the thin tin cover due to the grease. This is a very sensitive arrangement & it takes very little to cause failure.
