This car is stock and it's dialed in. After running around and letting it sit more than 10 or 15 minutes it won't start right up. Even the service manuel from 1977 says to give it 1/3 of the pedal while cranking but I had a 1977 so with the 403 that started immediately no matter what. Why is the pontiac 400 seem to be different?

Pontiac sometimes suffer from a heat soak issue. Exhaust manifolds or headers sometimes wrap around the starter and heat soak it. A heat shield or heat-resistant wrap around the starter will help.  Some guys will switch to a mini-torque starter. Installing a heavy duty Pontiac starter can also help if you don't have one already. Also sometimes if the initial timing is too advanced, this can also exacerbate the issue,

Grandprix, if you have a carter carb, pop the top off and check your float levels are correct, and while your there note what bottom gasket you have under the carb, you may need to add a thicker gasket to aid as a heat insulator... have a read of my thread... i am justA doing a carb rebuild as we speak  

maybe even do a refresh on your carb while your at that point, as it sounds like you have a fuel issue
