Shrinking the Blue Oval: What’s Driving Ford’s Line-Up Cull

Interesting read. Now if I try to read between the tea leaves, it would appear that Ford and FCA are simply abandoning the sedan/small and large car markets except for the profitable (read expensive) muscle car market. No one is buying their econo-boxes and uber-luxury-expense barges in droves. Same thing is happening at GM. Sales have shifted in favor of SUV/CUV vehicles and trucks these days.

So are the Big Three abandoning small car sales just because there is little consumer demand for them? Or are the Asians simply better at these sort of cars than us or are they suffering too? It would appear that consumer choice is once again under mining the governments agenda for 50 mpg vehicles by 2025-2030 - even though gas prices have climbed back up to $3/gallon. Will this price increase in gas cause people to jump back into econo-boxes only to find the Big 3 don't have any and then they will be ridiculed for it? Right now though, it is clear that consumers are not as worried about fuel economy as they were when gas was around $4/gallon.
