It's been my experience that the compact trucks don't really bring enough economy to the table to warrant the loss of capability. In the Sonoma, the 2.8 was inadequate, and the 4.3 got the same mileage as the 5.7 in the full sized truck, but didn't come close to it's bigger brother in towing and payload. To be honest, even parking wasn't a great improvement ... the big boy, at least, didn't pretend it was gonna fit  in that regular sized space.
