Car and Driver: Back It Up: Ford F-series Super Duty Offers “Trailer Reverse Guidance” Camera System

After introducing a Pro Trailer Backup Assist system for the standard-duty F-150, Ford is now parceling out similar trailer-towing tech for the Ford F-series Super Duty line of trucks. The Super Duty’s new Trailer Reverse Guidance system uses some of the truck’s seven cameras to increase visibility and coach the driver on where to turn the steering wheel when backing up.

-

The idea behind this system is to show a color-coded bird’s-eye view of the truck and the trailer on the center display screen. This is enabled by two side-view cameras mounted in the mirrors, along with a tailgate camera and an additional camera that you can place on the back of the trailer for even better visibility. These cameras keep track of the trailer’s motion and the screen display alerts the driver if the angle between the truck and the trailer is too tight, which could cause jackknifing. There’s also a camera in the center high-mounted stop light that can give a view of the truck bed to help with gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers.

Ford hasn’t yet said how much the Trailer Reverse Guidance option will cost, but it’ll likely be packaged similarly to the F-150’s tow assist system that’s part of an $895 towing bundle. Look for more information on the F-series Super Duty’s trailer helper as we wait for these new aluminum-bodied pickups to go on sale later this year.
