Touring Superleggera Disco Volante Spyder


Forget Panic! At the Disco. Get outta that Disco Inferno. Leave behind that fond, fuzzy memory of making out with Cherie Currie at Rodney Binghenheimer’s English Disco. Instead, welcome yet another iteration of Touring Superleggera’s take on their venerable Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 Disco Volante of the early 1950s. This time inspired by the open Spider variants of the ultra-rare, very famous ’50s Discos, Touring is introducing a run of seven Alfa Romeo 8C-based Disco Volante Spyders.

Unlike the original Disco Spiders, however, the new Spyder is a more Targa-intimate design, featuring a removable two-panel carbon roof that stores in the trunk. The panels weigh just 7.7 pounds each, and the split configuration makes for easier handling. If you’ve ever had to carry around a Veyron’s removable roof, you’ll appreciate the design. Touring notes that it’s the first open-top car in the revived company’s modern history; as such, the coachbuilder worked with Alfa Romeo to make sure the 8C Competizione Spider donor car’s structural integrity was maintained.


The whole machine is swathed in a lovely shade called “Blu Ceruleo,” while the cabin has re-wrapped in beige and black Connolly leather. The Disco’s shape comes from reworked body panels formed of aluminum and carbon fiber. The front bumper, grille, skirts, hood, decklid, windscreen frame, and rear crossmember are all constructed of carbon fiber (the hood and deck receive a Nomex filler to reduce vibration and increase stiffness), while the rest of the body is aluminum.


Touring claims the Disco Spyder will hit 62 mph in 4.5 seconds and top out at around 181 mph. From the time you supply your 8C Spider and an unspecified amount of money, the company will take six months to perform the transformation, which is significantly longer than it took Emilio Largo’s Disco Volante to change from yacht to speedy hydrofoil. But we can’t all be Bond villains, can we? Hell, most of us can’t even manage a passable Tony Manero.
