Details about Volkswagen’s upcoming, Tennessee-built mid-size crossover are scarce, but for a view through a Czech lens at what it could look like, peep Skoda’s VisionS concept. Just like VW’s upcoming crossover, it’s based on the MQB modular-transversal architecture, it’s quite large (185.0 inches long, 75.2 inches wide, 66.1 inches tall), and it is fitted with a psychologically indispensable feature to those shopping in the huge family-crossover market: Three rows of seating.

The VisionS is powered by VW’s 1.4-liter TSI engine, rated at 156 horsepower and driving the front wheels. A six-speed dual-clutch transmission incorporates a small electric motor that produces up to 64 additional horsepower. There is more electrification, as all-wheel drive is enabled by an additional 115-hp electric motor that powers the rear wheels. Total system output with all power sources up and running comes in at 225 horsepower.

To provide enough juice for the electric motors and “up to 19 miles” of fully electric range, the VisionS is fitted with a large lithium-ion battery pack ahead of the rear axle. Fuel economy on the European plug-in-hybrid test cycle—which is quite favorable to vehicles of this type, to say the least—is 124 mpg. The sprint from 0 to 62 mph is said to take 7.4 seconds, while top speed is rated at 124 mph. We do expect something like this powertrain to be offered, or at least considered, for the eventual three-row VW.

The VisionS is designed in typical Skoda fashion, with angular and horizontal lines, and less chrome than you might see on the models from corporate parent VW. The tackiest element is the pair of massive exhaust pipes, which look as if they were taken straight from the old Audi Q7 V12 TDI. Otherwise, this is a supremely clean and good-looking crossover, which might portend good things for its U.S.-market VW sibling.
