For a lot of people, there’s nothing wrong with the Toyota Prius that wouldn’t be cured by dropping in a V-8. Here then is just what the doctor 0rdered, a 2016 Prius with a 3.4-liter V-8. Oh, and it’s still a hybrid.

The V-8 is mounted amidships, and the Hybrid Synergy Drive system moves to the front passenger’s footwell, for better weight distribution. Output is capped at 300 horsepower, while an aggressive front splitter and a giant rear wing help manage airflow over the lower, wider body. It’s a look that would stand out even among the sea of Priuses on the 405 freeway.

You’re not likely to see it there, however. This steroidal Prius was built for Japan’s Super GT racing series, and it’s one of two that will be campaigned by APR Racing. The first GT300-specification Prius came out in 2012; this version, based on the fourth-generation car, was unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon. It will make its racing debut on April 9–10 at the first Super GT race of the year, at Japan’s Okayama circuit. Perhaps it will serve as an inspiration to Prius drivers everywhere.
