Steering column swap

Hi everyone just a quick question on my Pontiac ventura the original steering column was slightly damaged, and as far as im told these cars are hard to find parts but I was lucky to find a colum out of a 1972 nova everything bolted up well and so did the wire harnesses but when it comes time to start and the indicator says its in park the car wants to drive on its own! is there an adjustment to do I could use a little help thanks!!

The PRNDL indicator on the dash is moved by a small elastic cord that connects to a metal clip. The metal clip then clips to the rotating collar of the column. So it is possible for the car to be in Drive mechanically even though the PRNDL says park.
