Charleston WV Rod Run & Doo Wop Sep 30-Oct 4, 2015

The 10th annual Charleston Rod Run and Doo Woo will hit Kanawha Blvd (route 60) on Thursday, Oct 1st. The kick off cruise in starts Wednesday night at Mardi Gras casino with two $1000 drawings.

I will be there with Lucy for the 8th year in a row. Rumor has it that GE and the Roadkill Special might even show up.

Can you win both drawings for $2k?

Theoretically no. You have one drivers ticket. So two separate winners.

However, I have won over $125 in trivia questions at $25 a question. I have also won $85 from the free $10 cash the casino gives you (I won on slots). My first year I won the longest distance award which paid for my hotel that year. So I am good at winning cash while I am there.

I am heading out Wednesday morning bright and early. I will be in town in time to check in and then I will be heading straight out to the Mardi Gras casino in Cross Lanes for the kick off cruise in event. I hope to win me at least one of them $1000 give aways and perhaps win some more cash in the casino.

GE is suppose to come this weekend and rumor has it he has more stump water, this time for Indymanjoe, JUSTA, and notallthere. Hell, I am going to feel like a genuine bootlegger at that point.

I am doing the Route 60 Cruise later this morning, up to the New River Gorge Bridge. Rain is expected to come in later today and in the cards for tomorrow.

I will come Sunday Pro. However, I got a text from GE this morning that he is indeed headed this way. He had just gotten out of work and he was packing up and headed towards Charleston. So I expect him to show up anytime now.

I just finished up the Route 60 poker run. My poker hand was for crap (Ace,King, Five, Nine, Deuce - no flush hand either, the weather was for crap-rain, and we had a new route this year that took us south of Charleston and nowhere near the New River Gorge bridge or anything scenic (WTF?).

The Route 60 cruise and poker run was disappointing. We were only on Route 60 for a mile. We ended up heading south on Charleston down US 119 to a new Lincoln/Ford dealership. It was not that scenic or interesting cruise and I drew a loosy poker hand too. It rained the entire time too. We had only a dozen cars on the cruise because of the bad weather.

This Tempest is owned by fellow POCI member and my buddy, Bill Muck. He has been to Woodward with me too. When he is in town, he stays with Marge Sawruk, the widow of the late Pontiac historian, John Sawruk.

After the concert on the levy by Band of Oz, they brought in some heaters to warm us up on a damp cold night.

BTW - I won the 50/50 drawing tonight. It was worth $100. Damn I wish it was the lottery instead.

I spoke to GE just before dinner. He was waiting for his wife to get home before leaving for Charleston. So I expect to see him and the missus in the morning at the latest. He also mentioned something about having to change 16 spark plugs too. I don't know, I didn't want to know....you know?

Tomorrow's festivities include the Nitro Car Club assembling a punch of parts into a running car (a Model T). Bigfoot turns a bunch of cars into parts as well. The WV Drag Racing Hall of Fame inductees 20 new members (this is the 3rd year for the Hall of Fame). Fireworks are after 2 live bands, the Esquirers and the Motown Review, perform on the levy stage.

Well GE appears to be a no show - registration closed 20 minutes ago. I've tried calling and texting him all morning. I am wondering if all the rain and flooding down by Charlotte did him in. He has not answered his phone.

The big fireworks spectacular here has also been cancelled. They need dry weather to set-up the fireworks. Once set-up, the fireworks can be launched in the rain. It appears the rain is about to stop but it has been raining since last night here.

The rain continued thru the late afternoon. GE was a no show. I got a text from him around 5 pm, something about needing to work on the Roadkill Special. I think the headlight fluid needed to be topped off or the muffler bearings needed to be adjusted.

I was asked to be a tiebreaker vote by the Kanawha Valley Corvette club award. We  choose between 3 restored Ford coupes (a '29, '30, and '31). We choose this one because it was also driven - a lot. You could tell by the road rash on the wheels.

Here is a '64 GTO race car. Someone built a replica giant Hurst shifter like the one that was attached to a Pontiac Grand Prix back in the sixties with Linda Vaughan on it.
