GP Fuse Box got roasted.

Recommended Posts

Headlamp relay I replaced about a year ago burnt up. Was at Tractor Supply (of course haha) Came out after buying a few things (was inside for about 20 minutes) and saw smoke under the hood. I popped it and the fuse box was on fire. I ran inside the store and ripped a fire extinguisher off the wall, put it out and disconnected the battery.

Get this, while it was burning the fog lamps that I have no way to turn on because I lack the proper turn signal stalk with the switch were on.

Is it possible to get a new fuse box and replace? The damage is only at the box, nothing else got burnt.

Yeah you can only replace the fuse box.  There will be a large lug on the back and it may take a little work but it will disconnect.  Just check for damage before you go ahead and install the new one.

Agreed. Spend some quality time with the garden hose and a mild detergent washing out all the fire extinguisher powder out of the whole engine compartment. You definitely don't want it to find its way into the engine, tranny or any other moving parts. Its not too good for electrical contacts either.

You should be able to get a used fuse box for the GP from a reputable auto salvage yard that doesn't dismantle everything with a sawsall. I would replace everything in the fuse panel with new pieces too due to the fire extinguisher dust or the heat of the fire. Assume everything in there has been compromised in some way. Even if they still work, I would expect the useful life of the fuse or relay to have been shortened significantly. In my opinion, its worth replacing everything to have that peace of mind.

I'd look at everything else to make sure the cause was in the old box before installing the new one. If it was a short somewhere else that lead to the box melting down, you want to know before that new box follows the same path.

Damage is isolated to the fusebox. Secondary damage occurred to the wiring harness in close proximity to fusebox due to heat from the fire. Filed an insurance claim and it should be covered unless the adjuster finds "negligence" or the cost become too high, then shes "totaled", but I'll just fix it anyways.

GM is hounding me about this. They've been emailing and calling me about what happened and want all the info about the incident.

Lol really? Might be able to get some money back

Yeah lol, apparently I'm not the only one thats had this exact issue. Sounds like they're trying to avoid a liability issue

GM straight up said they will fix it free of charge or pay me $3600 for it. I didn't even have to hassle them for it. Seriously, good guy General Motors.

I might try to get another car, maybe another Grand Prix lol because I really really like my Grand Prix

08, Black. The price is suspect and he didn't list the mileage. Im going to look at it this week. If its alright I'd love to have it.

I think its an 07 not an 08 because I believe the 08 dropped the manual, right?

Holy... That's a lot of miles.

Believe '08s do not have a manual. I thought only '06s had them but it might be an early '07 that it has it. Send me a link and I can tell from the body what year it is.

This guy posted the Ad 3 times and dropped the price. Must really want to sell it. I wonder why

Like I said, I'm still gonna go look at it. Anything I should pay attention to beside the basic car stuff? My budget is $4500. Not much, I could get another GP for less, but a manual is just so seductive lol

I wiki'ed it. Says 6 speed was dropped it 08, but it was kinda vague so I don't know if there are some 08 models with it or not
