  1. Just testing the waters out. I have another Pontiac to get home, and need to clear out some space, and recoup some of the $$$ I have spent. 400 - TH400 with 3.08 rear. Runs, shifts, stops great. 1 finger steering. Rebuilt the carb (twice actually), rebuilt the distributor from top to bottom (pickup coil, coil, module, MSD advance, cap, rotor, wires) new fuel pump and lines. Cleaned out the fuel tank and installed new inline filter. Found the correct breather to valve cover connection, new oil and ZDDP, upper rad hose, heater hoses, and vac lines. Received the car with the wrong sunroof in it, so I had another '76 roof skin stitched over it and sealed until the original factory unit could be installed. Found all the interior panels and re dyed them including the trim pieces. Rear panels are in, along with the upper back seat. Installed new drivers door striker and adjusted it. I have 2 consoles and a floor shifter (correct to SJ) and much more that goes with the car. More pictures on my profile. Thanks.

  2. Grew up in the 70's tinkering in the "bull pen" of my family's car dealerships... Where the either cool stuff or the parts cars were parked. From a '53 Pont straight 8 to a 1973 LeMans sport, a 1968 Riv to a 1969 Cutlass Supreme (the notchback not the fastback S) I grew up eyeing cool cars (not realizing how much things would change) Underneath it all, we always loved the Pontiac. Everyone has Chevy and Fords, they just don't compare to the split grille torque monsters...

  3. Awesome job! Great design skills!  To have those kind of skills AND own a Pontiac... hmmm On a side note fellas, I was on my way to O'reilly yesterday and a G8 passed me and we both turned into O reilly. She was a 6.2 and sounded freakin wicked. (My first one to see up close - don't get out much) Might have a new wish for Xmas...?

  4. that would also explain why the 1,2,7 and 8 plugs are all black (rich) and the center 4 (3,4,5,6) are tanned? Will check it 2day.

EDIT: I think that I figgered out the issue for future reference. #1 the "t" that screws into the throttle body at the rear of the carb is threading into severely worn threads, and leaking after warm. #2 The brake booster is shot. The brakes felt okay, but I plugged off the vacuum line as well as the tee, and she ran grrrr-eat. It's 40 years old anyway, so it'll be 100 bucks well spent for the booster/master cyl combo. Anyone else having random stalling issues? Check it out!

  5. Thank you sir. It's been a headache at times, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Most recently had an offer to trade her for a '68 Galaxie fastback .. Uh no. (Not that there's anything wrong with those ha ha) I try to remember to visualize the finished product when it gets frustrating, especially during the factory ASC sunroof part search. Ordered a Newport 38 x 22 universal sunroof to get the hole filled sooner, but came to my senses thankfully before cutting on the car and booked a storage unit instead. Can't take the most rare option away from my baby... ha ha.

Thanks again, and once again, beautiful Goat!

  6. Much better after I finally broke down and pulled and completely rebuilt the distributor, and everything in it... ha ha. From the pickup coil to the plugs, all electrical ignition has been replaced. The MSD advance kit had great weights and springs inside it, and I chose to go with the medium springs. Now, I'm working on the choke thermostat,pulloff,etc.... The walker unit that I ordered through O'Reilly was backwards (in the way the spring cup was facing) so I have to send it back. I am still unsure of what that exhaust efe flap does, and whether or not it'd cause issues (or whether it's open or closed if I leave it disconnected from the vacuum line) The plugs were fine except for the outer 4 (1,2,7,8) which were all blackened with way too much fuel. Not sure why that'd be...? I am hoping that since those Delco's were in the engine throughout all of the carb and fuel pump and filter work that maybe the new set will burn cleaner. I do have a bent idle mixture screw that I am having a hard time finding. I found the original ASC sunroof but the guy wants like a grand for it. (pic attached) Will keep working on her after the rain stops, then she'll have to get into storage for awhile while the overtime stretch at work goes on until next year...

    Thanks for asking Bear!

  7. Just wanted to update y'all. I think that I have nailed down the issue. The ICM (forgot these HEI units had them) and coil are being replaced this weekend and not going cheap this time. Along with a better set of plug wires and platinum AC Delco plugs -- should be good after that. I believe it was the ICM causing the issues, but better just upgrade the rest of the ignition while I'm in there. Thanks.

  8. Well fellas, I drove the car to work Sunday, and about 1/2 way there (it's about 15 miles) it started sputtering, popping, and died. About 15 times. It took a LOT of cranking to get it fired back up after each stall. On the way home, I took the back roads and kept it under 30 mph and it only died once, again about 1/2 way home. I first thought that maybe the hei coil was failing after the car is warmed up (or plug wires) but I now am leaning towards the float being set a bit too low for highway driving. I also considered an issue with the power valve (it's a Rochester 2GC). Another thing that I considered was the fuel tank cap not venting properly, or the fuel or filter itself...? Got time to troubleshoot the next two days so any direction is much appreciated! It was nice to get her out though. Thanks.

  9. Excellent perspective and article. I reckon that I have one. Back in 1987 I was working at our local DQ and hadn't yet owned a car. Just so happened that the store Manager's daughter had recently wrecked her 1971 Cutlass S in between a fence and a guardrail shaving off the drivers door handle and scratching it up a bit. Well, after some haggling I started paying her whatever I could per week until the $300 bucks was satisfied. That ugly goldish color with the Brown interior and the sweet wooden console shifter ball... 350 rocket ran perfectly with 117,000 on her. I drove the heck outta that car for about 3 months until running out of gas one morning on the way to work. I walked down and got gas, returned to the car, and removed the air cleaner setting it just enough aside to pour a touch of fuel in the 4 bbl. Got into the car and fired her up --- and like slow motion -- I saw through the gap under the open hood -- when it started it shook a bit  and the air cleaner leaned just enough for the wingnut -- (I'm sure y'all know where this is going) sucked the wingnut right into the engine and within literally a second BOOM. Still sick over that one to this day. Every time that I pass that (now remodeled into a video store) parking lot, ugh... The interior was literally perfect. ugh.
