<p>

Yesterday on a stage on the Encore Theater at The Wynn Resort in Las Vegas, <a href=&quot;http://autoblog.com/chevrolet">Chevrolet</a> revealed its <a href=&quot;http://www.autoblog.com/2012/11/29/2013-nascar-chevrolet-ss-revealed/">NASCAR SS</a>, the race car that will contest next year's Sprint Cup series. A lot of people are talking about this car, and doing so well beyond the NASCAR fraternity - we were told that 30 minutes after it began the car became the number one trending topic on Twitter. The car looks great, Jeff Gordon showed up for some banter, everyone who was there applauded, the assembled drivers said the the right things.<br /> <br /> But it was at lunch after the event with Mark Reuss, president of <a href=&quot;http://autoblog.com/gm">General Motors</a> North America, and Jim Caldwell, US vice president of performance vehicles and motorsports, that we learned what we really wanted to know. That story centered on the car that the <a href=&quot;http://autoblog.com/tag/nascar">NASCAR</a> Chevrolet SS heralds, the production <a href=&quot;http://autoblog.com/tag/ss">Chevrolet SS</a> that will go on sale late next year. Reuss was quick to lay out two of the biggest issues surrounding it: "The only reason we brought this car over is to go racing," and "This is not a return of the <a href=&quot;http://autoblog.com/pontiac/g8">Pontiac G8</a>."</p><p><a href=&quot;http://www.autoblog.com/2012/11/30/how-the-ss-will-become-chevys-four-door-corvette-halo-car/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>How the SS will become Chevy's four-door Corvette halo car</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href=&quot;http://www.autoblog.com/2012/11/30/how-the-ss-will-become-chevys-four-door-corvette-halo-car/">How the SS will become Chevy's four-door Corvette halo car</a> originally appeared on <a href=&quot;http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 30 Nov 2012 19:57:00 EST. "The Australia-to-US move has been tried before with the Pontiac Monaro and G8, neither one working out as hoped."

What the f*ck is this nonsence? GM never really advertised that car well, and everyone that bought them loved them. If sales and marketing didn't drop the ball on that one the sales most likely would have been higher. GM should focus on what people want to buy vs what they want to sell you.

How could GM possibly hope that the Aussie-to-US move would have worked if they didn't put the effort into letting people know? This shit blows my f*cking mind.

In my conspiricist opinion, I think Chevy is just trying to kill of the idea that this is the G8 "2.0" because GM is embarrased on how much they f*cked up with the potential of the G8.

This is how I see it, correct me if I'm wrong, I'd appreciate it actually lol

>not the G8

>is based off the VF Commodore

GM, how stupid do you think we are? This is why you drop the ball on potential models so much.

They're saying "This isn't the G8" in terms of it will be better than the G8, why they are comparing it to the Vette, not in the sense of this is a completely different car than the Commodore.

The G8 was actually marketed quite well, at least down here. I still remember all the commercials on TV and the advertisement done. I also was extremely hyped up about the car so I remember every little detail I got. The Pontiac dealers were pushing it as well as I got tons of mail on it. The issue of the flop was because it came out in the begining Pontiac's demise around the 2008 model year. It only had little time on the market which was at the time of the gas height so not that many people were looking for an average blue collar man's V8 sedan.

I don't think GM caused it to fail, other than the forced demise of Pontiac, but rather the timing of a new V8 sedan during a gas height.

I still am thinking about a Chevy SS depending on my financials in two years.

My father and I didn't see much advertisement up here. Maybe because it was New England idk. And I've heard from other people around that it wasn't pushed well. I've also talked to owners of G8s up here and they said they found out about it from word-of-mouth kinda deal, more informal than typical ads.

I wonder if it was pushed so well down there because it is Florida? Like rich old people and nice weather seems like a better demographic for potential buyers lol

Could be, can't rule that out

Thing about the G8 was the issues I mentioned, I don't blame GM for not marketing a V8 everywhere in a time when people wanted 4-cyl or V6s. Also your potential buyers are going to be the car enthusiast who probably already know about it. Hard to say without data but sales may not been enough for them to market everywhere or they were just testing different market areas then the collapse of Pontiac came.

It's just like the Corvette, you don't see that many commercials for the Corvette but they still sell like hotcakes. The Camaro is another example but that has the "it" factor right now so there are some commercials and a lot of marketing behind it because they are really really selling like hotcakes lol.

I think the best example of marketing is saying its just "liquor and guessing" being a tech guy in the marketing department at work I always joke about this but it has some truth to it. There is a lot of testing for a product till you can say yeah let's spend a couple million on advertising regularly there.

This is the number one commercial that always played with my heart when it came on  It is forever embedded in my mind, thought it was so cool haha.

I had a bunch of marketing material for the G8, had the desktop background from GM, the Pontiac mag that came out with articles about it, the brochure, etc... etc... In all my moving I can't find a lot of it though :(

If Pontiac was still around it would have been a really hard choice for me between a Camaro, Firebird or a G8 GXP.

I love my GTO(s)! Screw off GM!

What a bunch of crap, Havoc is right though... I honestly don't remember seeing any commercials for either cars.

BUT, I can say this because 2005-2008 I was between Boot Camp and coming back from Japan in those years. lol
