The 9th Annual Rod Run and Doo Wop takes over Kanawha Boulevard (Route 60) in downtown Charleston WV starting Thursday, October 2nd. Kick events start Wednesday night, October 1st, at Mardi Gras casino in Cross Lanes. This is the largest car show in the state of West Virginia with nearly 1000 cars right on the levy.

Registration and event listing can be found at the above link. Free concerts and fireworks. Poker run from downtown Charleston to the New River Bridge Gorge. Lots of drawings and give aways too.

I will be there - this will be my 7th year in a row. I've even been asked to volunteer to help sell raffle tickets on Saturday.

Excellent location for a show.

We got wet & wild in 2002 at the POCI Convention, even with the inclement weather we had a great time.

Driving out from Virginia Beach and up and over to Charleston was one of the main highlights.

Gave the '66 a workout for sure, running through the gears in the mountains was a great experience.

It's a place worth a visit for sure!

After the long weekend we then drove across the high ground up and over to St Mary's County in Maryland to pick up my daughter.

Man did my clutch leg get a workout :)

I was there for the 2010 POCI convention SPRINT6. It is a time I won't soon forget (long story).

It's honestly one of the best car shows I've ever been to....and I am hard to impress. I have made a ton of friends along the way at this show.

I highly recommend the poker run up the the New River Gorge bridge on Friday too. You can often see the trees starting to change color too. A side trip to Babcock State Park to view the old grist mill can be worthwhile too.

So as Ghost says ...."Do it"!!!!

If I can drive 9 hours from Michigan, 5 hours is a no brainer Stratman.

Still thinking about it Frosty. I know I wouldn't be able to go up and back in one day and just not sure about the expense of staying over. If one were to go for one day, which day would be best? What day is the actual car show?

The car show begins on the boulevard on Thursday and runs through Sunday. By far the best festivities are on Saturday. The best live band performs at Haddad Park followed by the live fireworks. All the raffle drawings are usually held just before the band and fireworks. I would recommend getting there well before 12 noon, since registration usually closes because they get close to 1000 cars about that time and that's practical limit of the car show.

No classes - all awards are given by the various sponsors. If they like your car, you get an award. Its mostly a show n' shine. Lots of giveaways and raffles, free entertainment, poker run, etc. The show is open to all cars regardless of age.

The mayor, Danny Jones, tried a couple of years ago to push to make it a classic car show (20 or more years old or older) but that would alienate over 50% of their volunteers! Not a good move plus no one seems to mind the newer Chargers, Challengers, Mustangs, Solstices, GTOs, and Corvettes.

  • 2 weeks later...

I leave for Charleston 4 days. I can't wait.

Stratman - you coming?????

Frosty, as much as I would like to meet you and your beautiful Lucy Blue LeMans, I can't make it. :(

The only way I would be able to do it would be to stay over a couple of nights and I just can't afford it right now. Also, I'm on call next week at work. Have fun a take lots of pictures!

Now if they would have it at Charlestown instead of Charleston...
